Electives

ElectiveEach year the Recharge Committee looks to refresh the way in which it organises the electives and events that promote the vital spiritual growth of attendees.  If you are seeking to serve God passionately with practical skills to further His kingdom then Recharge will encourage you and facilitate direction. Over the weekend you will be able to choose four electives from a wide range of subjects to challenge you on topics such as leadership, understanding God’s will, male and female issues, evangelism, missions, relationships and heaps more. Elective speakers are selected based on their extensive knowledge and practical experience in their chosen disciplines. The electives are designed to challenge your commitment and ministry.  So whether you are a new Christian or an experienced leader from any denominational background, you will be refreshed through the dynamic ministry and fellowship of like minded Christians.

SESSION 1 - SATURDAY 10:30AM

  • Peter Shurley [Venue 1 Main Auditorium]
Where Have All The Leaders Gone?
The difference between a volunteer and a leader is not primarily their capacity to lead - it is the measure of commitment they are willing to invest. The church represents a huge pool of volunteers. What is required to rise from the ranks of volunteers to become a dynamic leader? Let’s look at the heart and life of a leader and find out what makes an effective leader fruitful.
  • Tim Hein [Venue 4 Recharge Café]
Dummies Guide to the 'emerging' Missional Church
What is it? How has it grown? What is its’ future? This elective tracks the different thoughts around this phenomena, and looks at why the 'missional' is far more important than the 'emerging'.
  • Ruth Limkin [Venue 5 Tamborine Lodge]

God is looking for people who will courageously and compassionately engage with their society to build a better future. Learn how to think and talk about the difficult issues with grace and intelligence. • Melinda Tankard Reist [Venue 7 WEC Dining Hall]
Resisting Objectification: addressing the objectification of women and sexualisation of girls in pop culture
In an age of “Girl Power”, many girls are feeling powerless. Facing unprecedented social pressure, their emotional and psychological well-being is at risk in ways never before imagined. How should people of faith respond to the objectification of women and sexualisation of girls? This workshop will take you on a confronting visual cultural tour, linking the bombardment of thin, hyper-sexualised messages and imagery with body image dissatisfaction, eating disorders, depression, anxiety and self-hatred.
  • Andrew Otte [Venue 8 Presbyterian Conference Room]
Winning the war against the flesh
Find out exactly what you are up against in the Christian fight against the flesh.  The Bible describes a "war" between the Spirit and the flesh.  Learn what it takes to have the Spirit win that war.
  • Susan Campbell [Venue 10 CMS Dining Hall]
    Contiki Christianity
The debate has long been brewing: are short-term missions a way to truly engage with our world? Are they a consumer item - a glorified Contiki tour for cashed-up young people, or something to add to your ‘complete Christian’ kit alongside your Make Poverty History wristband, Third Day CD and 40 Days of Purpose key ring? We’ll engage in the debate, highlighting ways to reconstruct missions in a way that is meaningful and lasting. We’ll also show snippets from a new DVD resource “The Trouble With Paris – how Paris Hilton made me a better Christian.”
  • Michael Knight & Sam Brewer [Venue 11 CMS Conference Room]
Beyond the Mascara - the essence of healthy femininity
An engaging seminar designed to encourage women to consider how they view and value what it is to be a healthy female in today’s society. The process incorporates an overview of healthy and unhealthy feminine behaviours. It also applies the principles of healthy femininity - confidence, compassion and capacity with inner beauty.
  • Peter Ralphs [Venue 12 CampPanorama]
Understanding how to use the Bible
How does this ancient book act as God's Word to us today? How are we to interpret it and make sense of its teachings for life in the present? How do we know what things still apply and what don't?  Find out how the Bible can guide our lives in an informed and dynamic way.

SESSION 2 - SATURDAY 1:30PM

  • Peter Shurley [Venue 1 Main Auditorium]
    Worship Team Nuts and Bolts.
A very practical session on the mechanics of how to make a Worship Team function effectively. Discover practical keys to bring commitment and consistency, and healthy growth and development in your worship team. We’ll talk about vision, leadership, preparation, team building and the ministry of worship.
  • Tim Hein [Venue 4 Recharge Café]
What's actually true about True Love?
This term is used and abused by our culture, and the time is right for us to reclaim True Love again. Love is actually God's defining personality, and this elective is an honest and real look at what that means for our search for 'The One'.
  • Ruth Limkin [Venue 5 Tamborine Lodge]
    Who you (really) are
What have you allowed to define you? - Parents, society, church, peers? Each of us needs to rediscover the way God has defined us and learn to live in the freedom that brings. Hear a personal story and practical principles you can take with you.
  • Lucas Parry [Venue 6 WEC Chapel]
    'Mo' Money, 'Mo' Problems?
Join us as we unpack free-trade, globalization, consumerism, micro-financing, foreign aid, global economics, and expand your worldview in this revealing session.  If you have a heart for mission, social action, or want to be informed about the current state of the world and how it affects us as Christians, come to this session... insightful, relevant and inspiring!
  • Melinda Tankard Reist [Venue 7 WEC Dining Hall]
Abortion: addressing the pain of abortion and providing life-affirming alternatives
Frightened off by the heat of the debate around abortion, many people of faith have backed off addressing the issue. As a result, vulnerable pregnant women have been left alone and isolated. Drawing from research on the impact of abortion on women, and on the desire of women for non-violent solutions to unexpected/unsupported pregnancy, this workshop will explore sensitive, pro-woman ways of addressing the issue.
  • Andrew Otte [Venue 8 Presbyterian Conference Room]
    Reactions to the Spirit
As God moves in our lives by His Spirit, our reaction to Him is crucial to His further work.  The New Testament shows what these different reactions may be, and provides the path to know the Spirit’s fullness.  It is not just about what is in your head; if you have a heart ready to be challenged to know His fullness, this elective is for you.

  • Susan Campbell [Venue 10 CMS Dining Hall]
    God’s Call – myth or must-have?
In a recent nationwide survey, 82% of young adult Christians indicated that if God wanted them involved in mission, he would give them a clear call. So, what is this “call”? How do you find it, feel it and follow it? Is it a secret code to decipher, a fuzzy feeling in your gut, a bolt of lightning, or a random Bible-flick during a church service?! Is it a Christianese word for career-drive, something to make us feel guilty about (if we don’t have one) or a vital part of our relationship with Jesus?
We’ll be tossing some theories around and hear personal experiences from people who’ve followed a “call”. Come along and talk to others about this ambiguous (but very, very important) topic.
  • Michael Knight & Sam Brewer [Venue 11 CMS Conference Room]
    Being a Bloke
Going beyond the stereotyping and discovering the essence and challenges of the masculine journey. The Masculine Journey isn't meant to be easy! But was it ever meant to be this confusing? Can you, with clarity and confidence, articulate the essence of healthy masculinity? If we can't clearly define where we are heading, is it any wonder we are having difficulty on the journey? This insightful session enables participants to consider the essence and challenges of healthy masculinity. Both sexes welcome.
  • Peter Ralphs [Venue 12 CampPanorama]
    Discerning the Will of God
It can be really confusing; how do you know what God wants you to do in the specifics of life? What does he think about your career, marriage partner, choice of car, where you live, or even your brand of toothpaste? Does God have a perfect plan for you just waiting to be discovered? Why does God seem to make it so hard for us to know His will? The aim of this seminar is to help sort out issues like these so that you can be more confident you are doing what God wants you to.

SESSION 3 – SUNDAY 8:30AM

  • Tim Hein [Venue 4 Recharge Café]
Herding Cats Part 1: Ministry & Mission with Young Adults
Explore the complex issues related to ministering with people in their 20's. Why are 78% of people saved before they are 18? Why do a large percentage stop going to church while at Uni? We will look at why this occurs, and what approach we can take to ensure your 20's can and should be an awesome authentic life journey with God.
  • Mark Westhuyzen [Venue 5 Tamborine Lodge]

  • Susan Campbell [Venue 10 CMS Dining Hall]
    Getting IN to justice
Ever considered you’ve won the cosmic lottery – you’ve blown candles out on your 5th birthday, drunk water from a tap, and have a roo and emu on your passport? You’ve heard the stats, seen the crying black faces on TV, and tossed a few coins into the cap of a homeless man in town.
So, what do you do with your feelings of injustice…or guilt…or apathy…or blame? How can followers of Jesus respond in ways to create real transformation, not only in poor communities around the world, but also in ourselves? Is it more than wearing an arm band, sipping fair trade coffee, or giving $5 to the next good cause? And what about the injustice of the unreached? Come to this workshop for a meaty discussion, practical tools, and lots of ideas for you to take the IN out of injustice.
  • Andy Coller [Venue 11 CMS Conference Room]
Poverty. can I really make a difference? (Part 1 of 2)
As we watch TV it’s easy to get the impression that efforts to end poverty are futile. Why waste your money? It is true that some activities don't make much difference. These electives give some direction on how to find ways to really make a difference. We will explore three main issues:
    1. Are there projects or agencies that really make a dent in poverty with the money I donate?
    2. Can I use my profession or skills to make a difference?
    And…(see Part 2)
  • Andrew Jones [Venue 12 CampPanorama]
    The Dramatic Bible
God’s word is referred to as: His living word, alive, the breath of God, animated, vibrant and thriving. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always seem like that when we read it in our busy lives. This elective isn’t just one for the drama queens, but for those who want to look at God’s word in a fresh and lively way. Come and be part of experiencing His word in a new light – using interesting and dramatic techniques.

SESSION 4 – SUNDAY 9:45AM

Herding Cats Part 2: Ministry & Mission with Young Adults
Continues the journey of part 1, but looks more deeply at evangelism to young adults, why it feels like mission impossible, and a unique biblical way forward. We also look at practical principles of leadership with young adults.
  • Mark Westhuyzen [Venue 5 Tamborine Lodge]

Worship: The Lost Significance of Symbol
Do you go to a modern church?  Isn't it great? Contemporary design, nice landscaping, comfortable seating, painted in nice soothing colours, mood lighting for services, cool swirling graphics projected behind song lyrics, a mirror ball...... But where is God? Has the Modern Church become bland in its bid to fit in and be relevant in today's world? If no one was in the church, would a non-believer know where they were? Come and explore symbol and how it may still be of significance to us in our worship.
